Proper well fitting footwear, that's right shoes! Without well fitting comfortable and durable footwear you're not going to get very far. Several changes of non-cotton socks are also a must, wool or a newer material called CoolMax is best. Just remember not to wash your CoolMax materials with fabric softener, fabric softener will obstruct the moisture wicking properties of the CoolMax fabric. So after you have an extra pair of good fitting shoes and four extra pairs of socks you may want to top off your foot comfort with some medicated foot powder to sprinkle in your shoes, not inside your socks. That way if you are on an extended hike you should stop at each watering hole to change your socks and wash the pair you have on so late they can dry for the next stop.
