Have been playing guitar since 2007. The songs i write usually start with an idea being noted on the iPhone. Then when driving to and from work, melodies flow in my brain. These are also recorded on my iPhone in a very low-fi attept to remember them. When i get a chance i will try to transfer the sounds in my head to a guitar. And it builds from there! This is the building process i find works best for me. It is a learning process but also an art.
