Come take a ride out to Hempstead, Long Island, and you might be surprised. Often considered the proverbial Mecca of the area. Hempstead serves as the Manhattan of Long Island in more ways than one. Hempstead is known for its plentiful nightclubs, hang out spots, restaurants, and recreational areas; not to mention the hip-hop scene,which has gradually developed into an area filled with talent that is craving a national audience. While the local emcees have long been overlooked, one rapper-LuRocmore, is hoping to change all that. "People in the industry make it difficult for true artists to succeed.
For some reason or another they overlook Hempstead," he said. "People in the game feel like cats from Long Island don't have that street credibility and they won't get respect from people. I just want to show that you don't have to be from the projects to be talented." LuRocmore, realizing a dream has been a tumultuous ride. Though his love for hip-hop music has been ever-present, his forays into writing rhymes and reciting verses began at the age of 16.
One of his older brothers Tony, recalls Luis' first attempts at freestyling and his heckling, which soon became praise for his ability. "I used to hear him rapping and I would say, 'Shut up, you suck! I would just say that but I never actually listened to him," he said. "One day he was rapping in his room and I stood by the door and listened. That was the first time I realized his talent. The next day I told him, you have a God given talent, he elevated himself to a different level that day." From there it seemed he was destined to pursue a career in the entertainment business. He is determined for his music to reach national attention.
