I CAN MAKE A BETTER COMMERCIAL THAN THATThis show combines the popularity of reality TV with a making-of show. It's also a brilliant way to get into branded television and tap into the popularity of consumer generated media.
We're bombarded on a day-to-day basis with commercials. Some good. Some excruciatingly bad. Some we miss because we've changed channels or made a trip to the washroom. But everyone has an opinion about them. And everyone knows someone (probably themselves) who thinks they can make a better commercial than the ones they see on TV. They just haven't been given the chance.
That's where "I Can Make A Better Commercial Than That" comes in. We're here to give the little guy (or gal) their time to shine. As much as any Tom, Dick or Harry (or Mary) may think they have a great idea, it doesn't stop there. They still have to produce it. We let our budding commercial geniuses do it all: come up with the idea, cast it, direct it, edit it, be involved with the music. Everything.
But it's not like they won't have any help. We provide our creative team with everything they need to succeed or fail. Professional camera crew, lighting, make-up, post production. But they are in charge. No one will second-guess them. And since their spot will be shot on 35mm film, it will have the look and polish the commercials we're all used to seeing. They may end up with a turd, but at least it'll be a polished one.
The humor of the show comes from the people chosen to produce the commercials. (Our cast.) These will be real people. People you see on the street every day. People you see at the bar. Maybe he was driving your cab today. It's best we choose groups of three people (ideally friends) to work together on their creation. We'll get to know these people and their personalities. Their interaction as they struggle to come up with an idea, decide who among them should direct, try to get through casting without just picking the most attractive person will be where the true entertainment value of the show lies. The actual showing of the commercial will, in fact, only be 30-60 seconds.
A major aspect of this show that really sets it apart is that it is a great vehicle for branded television. Each week we feature a different product or service. One week it's Budweiser, the next Apple. One week Coke, the next Visa. These advertisers pay to be featured in a nationally televised program for 60 minutes. During the show, we would show one of their actual commercials. And if advertisers are worried the commercial might not be as good as their agencies give them, it really doesn't matter since we've just spent an hour talking about their product.
After 12 weeks of winning ideas being made into commercials, the overall winner is chosen by a panel made up of a noted advertising professional and a celebrity. And, of course, viewers at home. The winning team is rewarded with a large cash prize and will see their commercial air on the Super Bowl- the one show people watch specifically for the commercials.
"I Can Make A Better Commercial Than That" really has it all: compelling real-life characters, the competitive element of reality TV, humor, the interest of a behind-the-scene show and the opportunity to be at the forefront of branded television. It's an idea that'll last a lot longer than 30 seconds.
