Recently hailed as "a charismatic performer of sensitivity and panache", 23 year old musician Ben Lathbury began playing the piano aged six. Coming from a musical family, he was encouraged as a youngster to take part in as many musical events and activities as possible, which led to him receiving an award for 'Outstanding Achievement & Contribution in Music' in 2004, 1st prize in the Opera Class of the 2005 Burton Competitive Vocal Festival and 1st prize in the Mozart Players Class at the Derby Arts Festival in 2006. During his university career, Ben started to establish himself as a performer of note, winning 2nd prize in Funtington Music Group's coveted 'Robert Headley Award' competition and making his début as a soloist in Chichester Cathedral. In 2009, after gaining a 1st class dissertation mark for his performance of Mozart's D Minor Piano Concerto and winning the 'Robert Headley Scholarship Bursary for Higher Education', Ben went on to become runner-up of the 1st Clifford Benson piano competition at the University of Chichester and made his orchestral début with Buxton's 'High Peak Orchestra' in December. Since then, Ben has gone on to win the 2nd Clifford Benson piano competition with soprano Lisa Pow and regularly performs as both soloist and accompanist. His most notable performances include engagements at Leconfield Hall (Petworth), Lordington Park House (Lordington), Bognor Regis Music Club, Chichester Cathedral, Pallant House Gallery (Chichester) during the 1st series of 'Piano Proms' in the autumn of 2009 and the Guildford arts festival 'Guilfest' in the summer of 2008.Ben recently completed his fourth year at the University of Chichester and received a Masters Degree in Music Performance, having majored in Classical Piano under the tutelage of the Head of Keyboard, Jonathan Plowright. He currently enjoys an active teaching, accompaniment and freelance performance schedule, which include his duties as Director of Music at St. Margaret's Church in Ifield. Ben is currently available for piano, singing and theory lessons in and around the local area to people of all abilities and ages and has aspirations of ultimately becoming a university lecturer. In his spare time, when not performing, teaching or practicing, Ben lives quietly in Chichester with his fianceé Lauren, their cat Persephone and their two gerbils Barney & Ted, and enjoys playing pool, golf and badminton, swimming, driving, reading and writing literature.
