I am the mother of autistic twins. They were born in 1985, so they are quite big now. Caring for them became easier as they got older..thank goodness. My husband and I went thru a separation on March 26th, 2009, which was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life. He came to my home everyday and stayed for about 8 hours each day after the separation. Except when it rained, then I let him stay all nite. One day he came over and told me about Susan Boyle. He knows I love the United Kingdom news and always kept me informed during out 26 year marriage. Within 3 weeks after our separation, I felt a surge of joy and hope when I watched the Susan Boyle film clip he told me about. Susan made my life much more bearable and gave me a sense of joy I hadn't had in a very long time.4 months later my husband had a stroke. During my days and evenings of sitting on his hospital bed, I bawled and realized I still loved him. When he was discharged from the hospital, I moved him in with me permently so I could take care of him. I joked with him saying that if he got out of line now, that I could cow tip him. He just looked at me but was not amused. I was very amused tho. A year later, almost to the day, Alex had another stroke. When I made it to the shock trauma hospital 20 miles away, they told me the stroke was so bad, that he was never going to wake up. I almost fell on the floor with devestation. Days later, they asked me to decide when to take him off the respirator. I waited until his mother realized he wasn't going to wake up before it could be done. The day before I had to let him go, I shaved his face and washed him several times. I was surprised to see how even then, he didn't want to be shaved. He would pull away from the blade with every stroke around his mouth area, but he didn't wake up. The next day September 10th, was something out of a horror movie. The medical team was waiting for us as we walked down the hall and into my hubby's room. I had to say goodbye to him, and I leaned over and hugged him. They put a large sheet of paper over me so that I wouldn't get messed up when they pulled the tubes out of his throat, stomach and lungs. He gagged and jerked around. Then they took the paper off of him and I. I talked to him and hugged him as his breathing became slower and slower. Then it stopped all together. His heart stopped soon after that and he lost all color. After he was pernounced dead, They left us alone and I bawled until I almost passed out. They filled an anxiety medicine for me so I could get myself under control. I talked to him and told him I loved him and shaved his face again. After about 90 minutes, I had to leave because he was an organ donor and they harvested his cornias. I got a letter from the eye bank of Maryland a month later informing me that 2 people received Alex's cornias and that they now could see. Wow! Even in life he was a volunteer for the Laurel Vol. Rescue Squad. He had 13,704 ambulance calls to his credit and delivered 3 babies during his time with the rescue squad. He is the top runner of that station and his achievements decorate our house.
About 6 months later, I got a phone call from my sisters partner in NV. She told me that Heather was stage 4 with liver cancer and wasn't given much time to live. I packed the boys and I and flew to vegas as soon as I could. I made it to my sister March 31st of 2011. I was able to visit with her for 7 of the 9 days we were out there. She had some good days when we could visit and she would smile at me. Other days she mostly slept and couldn't visit much. I would run my fingers thru her hair and was overcome by how she got so sick. She lost her health insurance a few years ago when she developed back problems. A year after that she would bleed when she went to the bathroom. No one would examine her because she had no health insurance. This went on for a year. When she finally got disability benefits, the colon cancer was found. It was too late tho. It had enough time to spread. The last day I saw my sister, she looked up at me telling me, "Don't go". I will never forget that moment or the helplessness I felt as I had to tell her that one of my boys would lose his job if I didn't go back. She said ok, and I hugged her and told her I was so sorry I had to go. Heather died 22 days after I last saw her. I few back to Vegas to bury her. On the eve of her funeral, I saw "A Mother's Prayer" for the first time. I felt for a few minute while listening to it that I was actually still alive and that maybe that was a good thing. I don't know why we are all here and have to go thru things terrible things for no reason, but I am greatful to Susan Boyle for helping me to get thru what ever comes my way.
I love you Susan, thank you for helping me.
Thanx for explaining the audio, I knew it was Susan singing, but that the timing to the music wasn't studio perfection. Thank you for the heads up about the Larry King interview where she sung it acapela. I will look up that interview now......I can't believe I didn't know about it.
