So a lot of people have been coming up to me and telling me that they hated it/it sucked/the acting was horrible/etc. etc. And so, I've decided to write a sort of review... about what I thought of the movie :] But obviously, this might be a little biased. So, I guess it's understandable that some people won't like it. But having read the books... numerous times, I think that they did a relatively good job of staying faithful to it, which was pretty much all anyone can ask for.
So I'll be addressing the following criticisms:
1)The acting was horrible/awkward
2)the effects were cheesy
--------------------------------------------------------
1) TWILIGHT IS AWKWARD. That's what it is. This is the book that introduces us to Bella and Edward. Obviously, their story is very unorthodox - vampire and human..? It IS awkward. If you've read the book, then you'd KNOW that it's supposed to be awkward. And if you've read it and don't understand, then you should probably read closer next time. Edward wants to kill her. Can it really get anymore awkward? Ok, sorry I'm overusing the word awkward. Anyways, I think Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were able to capture the essence of Edward and Bella's relationship beautifully. They (E&B) both don't know what they're doing - they're new to this. Bella has never had any sort of boyfriend in her life, let alone a vampire boyfriend. Edward also has never had a relationship with a female like this before. Everyone's been in some kind of love, be it puppy love or true love - you've been unsure of yourself and what the other thinks of you - it can be awkward when you're with the other person. Then add on the fact that Edward wants to kill Bella - so he loves her, but he wants to kill her. THIS is what they're trying to capture... awkward much? For example, the facial expressions that Robert uses in the movie show the pain and anguish that Edward is feeling when he initially meets Bella - I think he nails it. Kristen's shy and removed character portrays the intimidation Bella feels when she's with Edward; who wouldn't be intimidated if they ever met Edward in the flesh? So, what I'm trying to say is, the awkwardness of the movie is intended.
2) THE EFFECTS. I admit, the effects were a wee bit cheesy. The sparkle of Edward's skin, the speed at which the vamps run... But this is to be expected. I'm not trying to be biased here - I was really upset with the sparkle of Edward's skin; one of the things I was really looking forward to. But with their skimpy $37 million budget, there wasn't much they could do. Compared to other huge franchises like Harry Potter, Batman, Spiderman, etc. Twilight is pretty tiny. BUT, now that Summit has officially announced NEW MOON will be made into a movie, I'm sure it's gonna be much better than Twilight. With $7 million in profits from the MIDNIGHT SHOWS ALONE, and about $34 million on Friday, Twilight is box office gold. They're going to have A LOT more to invest in NEW MOON. So, expect more from the next movie.
*There was also a lot of humor in it... Some parts were pretty funny, so that's a plus too.
SUMMARY: Overall, the movie was good. The effects were mediocre and the pace was a little too fast for my taste, but I blame that on the fact that they condensed a 500 page novel into a 100 page screenplay. However, they did keep all the essential elements in the movie and stayed faithful to the book, which I greatly appreciated. The movie will satisfy most fans of the book, but for those who have not yet been initiated into the world of Edward and Bella, I'm afraid it might fall short. All in all, I would give it a B+/A-
