About this user
Born and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York, side by side with the rebellious growth of Hip Hop, Nomi began singing before she could speak in full sentences. Brought up by her single mother in a one bedroom apartment, she spent most of her life locked away in a room full of fantasy and song. She used music as her escape and began composing ballads around Hip-Hop heavy street samples. Her deep, dreamy vocals found refuge in these raw arrangements, and she began to create a unique brand of soul music.Nomi has since grown to be a part of a movement of artists who are changing the landscape of contemporary music. After the release of her 2005 debut album 'Lost In Lust' she appeared on Artes Tracks, received full page features in Vice, Mass Appeal and the NY Press, performed live on NPRs Spinning On Air, toured with CocoRosie, Debbie Harry and Antony & The Johnsons as part of the multi media masterpiece, Turning.
Her recent involvement with DFAs chart topping Hercules & Love Affair took her on a world tour as part of the most dynamic live dance acts of the year. The self titled debut album produced by Andrew Butler has been referred to as the dance album of the year by everyone from MixMag to the Guardian. Her performance on the Chicago house inspired You Belong, a duet with Antony, is being compared to Yazoo-era Alison Moyet and the UKs Guardian referred to Nomi as a performer who boasts the spookily effortless air of a future pop icon.
Nomi now finds her way back to her native home and in the studio where she is collaborating with keyboardist Morgan Wiley and bassist Andrew Raposo who are also known for their work with Hercules & Love Affair and DFAs Automato. Together they are known as Deep Red and are working on an album, which brings together dance, rock, pop and R&B. Their first single, Fun Girl is a sexy, dark dance number which was called "spooky and mesmerizing" by Arjan Writes. They recently debuted at (Le) Poisson Rouge and were called "Vanity 6 meets Inner City" by URB Magazine.
