About this user
was built in 1869 by Asa and Frances Beach so this year I am 139 years old. I have seen a lot of history in my day, some good, some bad, but I managed to survive! Now I am listed on the New Haven Trust Preservation list of protected (but not historical) homes. My owner feels that I am historical though. You see I am her first house. She worked hard to purchase me in 1995 from Neighborhood Houses Services and was so proud to own me. Over the years I have watched her try to help her friends and family. As you can see I am a fairly large house, 2 legal apartments, and a partial 3rd floor apartment so when people were down and out they came here and my owner accepted them, usually taking less than the fair market value for the space (apartment) she rented. Once she rented to her immediate family and they lied to R.A.P. and said that she had locked them out the kitchen, an impossibility due to my layout at the time. R.A.P. didn't care that it was physically impossible they just stopped paying the rent. When my owner took steps to remove free-loading, lying family they destroyed the entire 3rd floor! She called the r.a.p. office to file a complaint but when she was told that the family would be kicked off the program if they did not make repairs she stopped it. She did not want the children involved to be homeless which is what would have happened if the "head of household" had lost her r.a.p. certificate. There are numerous examples like this of my owner's generosity and they all usually turned out the same way. People felt they were entitled to her help, hey big house, full-time job, she must be rich right! WRONG! She wasn't rich she cared. And that was a big mistake because now she is in trouble and NOT ONE of the many people who have passed through my doors (and still do) have offered to help her. They don't call, write or even send smoke signals! So I am asking for anyone who is interested and caring to help my owner keep me. She tried to hire a home improvement contractor to upgrade my 2nd and 3rd floors so that she could have another apartment and get much needed additional income to help pay the $2K+ mortgage she owes on me but he took off not completing the work. She hired an accountant to help her learn to budget her meager income then was layed off from her job of 6 years. Boy you should have seen her "friends" scatter when that happened. So I am appealing to strangers, since obviously friends can't be relied on to help my owner keep me. If you can offer any assistance at all please let me know. I will greatly appreciate it.
