My favorite actor is 1940's heartthrob William Eythe.Theatre-trained, he was originally placed under contract to 20th Century - Fox during the war years as a possible replacement for Tyrone Power, who had joined the military. His performances in "A Royal Scandal" with Tallulah Bankhead, and the British-made "Meet Me At Dawn", proved however, that Bill was a brilliant light comedian, who could have gone-on to do wonderful things.
Outspoken, hard-drinking, reckless in his life-style, open in his sexuality, he managed to alienate a lot of people at his studio, and they finally let him go. He had a personal triumph here in Hollywood, and on Broadway, in his own revue, "Lend An Ear", but alcoholism, diminished opportunities, and finally obscurity-itself, quickly swallowed him-up. His closest friends, actor Lon McCallister, and Bill's protege,Carol Channing, remained loyal to the end, and truly loved Bill, which is completely understandable, given his personal charm and dynamic-charisma.
His pic seen above is my little tribute to a very large, sadly-forgotten talent.
Bill's life is probably best summed-up from these lines by the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay:
"My candle burns at both ends, it will not stand the night -- but ah my foes, and oh, my friends, it gives a lovely light!"
Rest well, Bill.
