Found it at last, after 50 years! This was used as the theme tune for the BBC radio production of Nicholas Nickleby when I used to listen to it in bed in the dark as a boy!

Atmospheric doesn't even approach it!

Yes, the TV effects are awful. It was the time when they had just discovered how to do special effects with the studio cameras and we were plagued with all sorts of strange shapes, shadow effects, split screens etc for a couple of years until the novelty wore off!

She copies the record so faithfully (I noticed a couple of tiny additional inflections) because that is the way audiences wanted to hear it, not the awful "variations" that singers do on their songs nowadays, completely ruinin...
