I started out with windows movie maker which taught me the basics. I used the advanced time line setting on it instead of the storyboard. In fact I used it till 11th grade.
When ya think ur ready to go past it find someone whose good with finding programs off the internet and download (Sony Vegas). This program is like windows movie maker on steroids, it also takes a while to learn so just play with it and dont give up. In fact youtube has millions of lessons to help ya out with it. Even how to find it on the internet.
When it comes to special Effects like the magic chemistry teacher I used Adobe After Effects. This program is extremely hard to learn in fact i use youtube everytime for it. But like Sony Vegas you have to find a way to get it.
Hope this helps dude stick with it and ull be great by the time u graduate
