Notice how the energy level/entertainment value picked up when Rickles showed up? He was the ultimate talk show guest w/ his ad libbing. He could say and do anything and get away w/ it. One of a kind.

He's sitting there talking w/ Letterman knowing what he's about to do and is calmly going about the interview. He makes the transition into the New Years celebration seamlessly. Great stuff.

Whitney died because of her own choices. Given the timing of her death, it was appropriate to remember her at the start of the show. This tribute was not necessary, IMO. Many other performers passed away in the last year and have passed away through the years w/o a special performance of a son...

She was this generation's Billie Holiday, only prettier, from less humble beginnings and w/ a better voice.

It's easy to say it now, but look how she's sweating and she seems to be struggling. She's still gorgeous and that voice was one of a kind.

Fabulous talent. She was a prettier, more powerful Billie Holiday w/o some of the pathos.

Doesn't really matter that it was lip synched. She still sang the song and it was awesome.
