I have played piano since 1955 and have researched Ragtime era "Silent" Movie music for years, having performed everywhere from Hollywood to London, including shows for the National Film Registry Tour. The interest in accompanying action on screen or stage comes from my work as a trombone player, when I played in shows like ice shows and circuses.

The pursuit of 35mm movies to show with my authentic hand cranked 1910 Power's Cameragraph projector led to the becoming a film archivist and being able to handle 35mm nitrate film and all other formats, including 8mm, Super 8 & 16mm. I have archived such collections as 35,000 ft of newsreel cameraman Charles W Herbert's 35mm nitrate camera negatives and 50,000 ft of 16mm films made by famous Arizona artist Ted deGrazia.

In 2006, Louise Giusto and I produced a "Neo-Silent Newsreel" about the 100th Anniversary Ceremony Commemorating the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. We shot this in color using a 1922 Bell & Howell hand cranked 35mm camera and showed on the big screen at the Castro Theatre as part of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.

Being an Arizona native and looking ahead to the Centennial of Arizona Statehood in 2012, my goal is to establish the Arizona Film and Video Archive using the latest digital technologies. What this means is that film and video material does not have to be gathered into one place, but can be made accessible through an on line database.

The material I am interested documenting is the "Orphan" films that were shot in Arizona, by and for Arizonans, rather than commercial Hollywood productions. This includes professional documentaries, promotionals and newsreels, as well as home movies and videos that have made their way to public institutions. DVD's can be produced from this material to help fund the project, and our 2002 production about the Indian Fire that almost destroyed Prescott is an example of using material that would have been lost in just the 5 years since the event. Look at my videos on YouTube for a sample of this treasure that is waiting to be discovered and put to good use.
