The Axis of Weevils are a collective of artists who use video and sound with other performative facets (ie. dance and lighting) to create live collaborative performances. We are based in Aotearoa New Zealand and have been active as a collective since early in 2003. Our main focus is on integrating VJing with live music performances.
The Axis has become well known over the last four years, having performed at a range of events from dance parties and concerts, to festivals and art exhibitions. In this time we have performed throughout both of the islands of New Zealand as well as having involvement in several overseas events. We are pushing the boundaries of what can be done, as well as helping to expand the audience and the recognition of live visuals as an accompaniment to music and an artform unto themselves.
Our goal is to utilise VJing technology and techniques in an atmosphere that allows the audience to focus on the visuals, rather than as a kind of background diversion or wallpaper at dance parties. We believe that visual projections have a big place in the future of live performance and we continue to work towards building recognition of the limitless possibilities for expression that live visuals hold.
The Weevils have become known for their innovative live performances, their compelling original content, and unique staging and delivery.
