I am on a journey, together with my autistic daughter. I am learning so much about the world, through her eyes.

Jade has made, and continues to make amazing progress, We owe this to the MCHAT, early intervention, acceptance, treating her underlying immunodeficiency, and LOTS of love. Jade was diagnosed with classic autism at age 1 (22 mos).

We then began our own early intervention approach, guided by our quite limited bank account (which we secretly are thankful for now), and the limited services provided by Early Steps.

We began many one on one activities, lots of time with nature, music, messy art, movement, and found one hell of an immunologist!!!!

Jade surprised us by reading at 26 months, plunking out Twinkle Twinkle on the toy xylophone at 28 months. She is truly a genius. I have been fortunate to witness the development of one of the most amazing brains, and people in the world.

Today 11/09- Jade is now 5, and in kindergarten. She is in a contained classroom for children with HFA on regular ed standards, and mainstreamed almost 1/2 the day during various activities. She is now moving on from 1st grade reading to second grade :o) As Jade's immune system improved, so did her connectivity to our world. She is much calmer, can focus now, her communication has greatly improved (she is moving from echolalia to real speech!) and likes to play with other kids!

I do hope, by sharing Jade's story, she may help other children get the understanding and help they need as early as possible. I also hope that it helps parents to understand acceptance, and what a wonderful thing it can be.
If your baby shows any of these signs, please ask your pediatrician or family practitioner for an immediate evaluation:

-No big smiles or other warm, joyful expressions by six months or thereafter

-No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, or other facial expressions by nine months or thereafter

-No babbling by 12 months

-No back-and-forth gestures, such as pointing, showing, reaching, or waving by 12 months

-No words by 16 months

-No two-word meaningful phrases (without imitating or repeating) by 24 months

-Any loss of speech or babbling or social skills at any age

Autism is a complex diagnosis. Children must display many signs to be diagnosed. Every child will, at some point, display a sign or two of autism.
