I am a 26 year old from Massachusetts. I was born on July 16, 1981. I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus before I was born. When I was borm, my parents were told I would not survive, but if I did I would never be able to walk or talk. In fact, my parents learned sign languge. I am half deaf. I was legally blind when I was little. I spent most of my childhood going in and out of the hospital, having had 18 operations. (16 before age 11.) I never learned to walk until I was 10. I was in a wheelchair full-time (outside of the house) until I was 19, at which time, I was also diagnosed as having scoliosis. I'd like to think of myself as a teacher because I've been through a lot and have been educating people about all sorts of disabilities. In 2002, I went to a protest for budget cuts at the state house. I was one of the few people interviewed, however, I was discriminated against by that member of the press. It was as a reaction to that that I started the first annual Ability Week. The full title was, Abilty Week: Attitudes are the Real Disabilty. The week took several months to organize, and comsisted of a panel of individuals with special needs talking about what challenges they face in everyday life, a powerlifting presentation by a paralympic athlete, a presentation about "disabled" sports, and a 3-on-3 wheelchair baskerball tournament. The tournament allowed everyone on the college campus to form teams of three and play against each other, with the winner playing against a local professional wheelchair basketball team. The event was designed to promote the inclusion of all people and to close the gap between "disabled" and "able-bodied." I have had to fight for accessibility for the physically-chsllenged because at the time I entered college, Our old college buildings weren't ADA compliant. I have also become an advocate for other people with special needs. I firmly believe in equality for everyone! No one deserves to be denied opportunities based on their ability-EVER!
