@xxman7 Over 30 airlines operated IL-62s and they all had good safety records except with LOT. There were reasons for this, primarily because LOT didn't get equipment for checking turbines until 1987, but they also cut back on what little maintenance they did during the 1980s. It was important to...

@rafalweb This plane is very safe, especially for a 1960s design. A lot of planes from that era had wood fitments. Standard procedure for uncontained engine failure is to land. In flight 5055, the captain elected to keep flying (it's unclear why that decision was made against the advice of the fl...

@ATLRCFlyer IL-62s can climb quickly but pilots generally adopt a shallow angle so as to minimise turbulence from the wings which are over 3000 sq ft area and relatively larger than those on the VC-10. The power to weight ratio of the 62 is actually very good.

@davewave57 There were 40 civilian VC-10s of which 3 were given to Boeing in payment for new planes. Of 37 planes, 2 crashed. Two others were lost in accidents excluding terrorist losses (GARTA & XR806). They were in civilian service for 16 years and retired in 1981. Over 280 IL-62s were in civil...

@seboxman Russians never did complete overhauls on LOT planes - engines are overhauled individually after specified times depending on flight hrs and/or cycles and changed after 18-20,000 hrs. Outer engines have different overhaul times to inner. They are supposed to be checked between overhauls ...

@kamilinlondon The IL-62M is very safe. Poland operated 23, 13 of which it owned and 10 leased from Tarom and Aeroflot. @FullMetalJackSquat That was the "luggage at hand" system that the IL-86 used to speed up boarding when there were no air bridges. @1docentfurman Poland uses Russian planes such as Antonov and Yaks. The IL-62 is a robust design with a very low accident rate. Early ones required more maintenance than later versions and LOT simply did not have equipment for doing this. Some LOT 62s (including 5055) had auxilliary fuel tanks fi...
