    Cubana Ilyushin Il-62 flight

Flight from La Havana to Santo Domingo.

    Registration CU-T1284.

    av21031 av21031 commented:

@1docentfurman Poland uses Russian planes such as Antonov and Yaks. The IL-62 is a robust design with a very low accident rate. Early ones required more maintenance than later versions and LOT simply did not have equipment for doing this. Some LOT 62s (including 5055) had auxilliary fuel tanks fi...

    av21031 av21031 commented:

@xxman7 Over 30 airlines operated IL-62s and they all had good safety records except with LOT. There were reasons for this, primarily because LOT didn't get equipment for checking turbines until 1987, but they also cut back on what little maintenance they did during the 1980s. It was important to...

@rafalweb This plane is very safe, especially for a 1960s design. A lot of planes from that era had wood fitments. Standard procedure for uncontained engine failure is to land. In flight 5055, the captain elected to keep flying (it's unclear why that decision was made against the advice of the fl...

Vickers VC-10 awesome airliner! **feel the noise**

    VX107.

    EGCC/MAN departing 23L.

    1st April 2010

    av21031 av21031 commented:

@ATLRCFlyer IL-62s can climb quickly but pilots generally adopt a shallow angle so as to minimise turbulence from the wings which are over 3000 sq ft area and relatively larger than those on the VC-10. The power to weight ratio of the 62 is actually very good.

    av21031 av21031 commented:

@davewave57 There were 40 civilian VC-10s of which 3 were given to Boeing in payment for new planes. Of 37 planes, 2 crashed. Two others were lost in accidents excluding terrorist losses (GARTA & XR806). They were in civilian service for 16 years and retired in 1981. Over 280 IL-62s were in civil...

@iwannabethekid34x Why exactly would the BBC be anti-American? av21031 av21031 commented:

@seboxman Russians never did complete overhauls on LOT planes - engines are overhauled individually after specified times depending on flight hrs and/or cycles and changed after 18-20,000 hrs. Outer engines have different overhaul times to inner. They are supposed to be checked between overhauls ...

Ilyushin Il-62 from Cubana De Aviacion at Aeropuerto international Jose Marti by Simon Lowe

Flight deck visit shortly after takeoff. Includes communication with New York ATC. Many thanks to Cubana flight crew.

    av21031 av21031 commented:

@kamilinlondon The IL-62M is very safe. Poland operated 23, 13 of which it owned and 10 leased from Tarom and Aeroflot. In the first, the engine was known to be faulty and had caused probs when fitted to other IL-62s, and in the second, they didn't land the plane in spite of the flight engineer's...

@aspiringdrummer17 Thanks for noticing the typo - I meant 1035kph. The Tu-154 is sometimes described as the fastest civilian jet in srevice since the demise of Concorde but I don't know that they are actually faster than an IL-62 at full throttle.

    av21031 av21031 commented:

@FullMetalJackSquat That was the "luggage at hand" system that the IL-86 used to speed up boarding when there were no air bridges. Passengers deposited their luggage in underfloor compartments as they entered the airliner and then went to the upper deck. The system was used in the Lockheed Trista...

@Lex5576 That's flawed logic - 95% of Cubana's aircraft fleet is Russian (mostly Soviet era models) and 5% is western, yet western makes have accounted for 28% of accidents in Cuba.

@FlyerKBOS Other operators had engine failures but none resulted in a crash (and IL-62s were flown by 32 countries).
