LABOR ECONOMY GROWTH

The collapse of the Thai baht in July 1997 ignited the Asia crisis that lasted for just over two years. Because of the importance of Asia to Australian exports, the economic crisis was predicted to send us into recession along with the rest of the global economy.

However, despite these fears, the Australian economy proved to be remarkably resilient throughout the period. Australia has achieved above average growth rates, strong productivity growth, a low inflation rate and an improving labour market despite the adverse effects of the external crisis. Australia, in the 1990s, has benefited from having undertaken several reforms in the 1980s, such as reform of the financial system, the floating of the exchange rate and the internationalisation up of the Australian economy.
