Auraphone is an eleven-piece modern music ensemble led by guitarist, composer, and arranger Mike Pinto. Initially assembled for his graduate recital at DePaul University, it quickly became clear that the group should continue to perform thereafter. Featuring Mike's compositions and arrangements, the unique sound of Auraphone is a combination of the orchestrations of Bill Holman, Maria Schneider, and Jim McNeely; the textures of Radiohead, Jimi Hendrix, and Joni Mitchell; the improvisatory approaches of Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau and Chris Potter; and the totally original rhythmic perspectives of the musicians involved. Auraphone is an exciting new presence in Chicago's burgeoning large-ensemble scene.
