Medtner is one of my favorite composers. I believe at one point I had all of his concerto recordings. I love the concertos but I'm not sure if they are ever going to be popular as they are hard nuts to crack. But I do believe his Op38 Forgotten Melodies will become part of the standard repertoir...

Hamelin plays Ravel - Scarbo from 'Gaspard de la nuit' Audio + Sheet music

I know Scarbo is notorious for it's difficulty but is it that much harder than Ondine? I always find the unevenous of a technique even more obvious in Ondine.

@MrPiano90 Thanks for the upload. My favorite movement of my favorite recording. Music need not be complex to be beautiful. This is a fine example of minimalism with devastating results. Absolutely sublime!

Think about how many "virtuoso" works he performed. You can count on one hand--maybe Paganini var, Gaspard, Liszt 1. I have every single one of ABM's Gaspard. This live 1960 Prague is the most spectacular & my favorite. It isn't because of the technical achievement. The color/effects he create...

My all-time favorite version. I've always felt this somewhat cold, detached VoxBox sound adds to the genius of the piece and performance. I'm sorry, I can't imagine a modern piano recording of this.

@dalecampbl9 Listen to his "Funeral Prelude and Funeral March" and Stations 13 and 14 of "Via Crucis" on YT. I guarantee you'll hear Schoenberg op11 in Via Crusis. The Funeral Prelude/March is one crazy piece that could've easily been composed in the 20th century. Still my favorite late Liszt ...

@DanielDFizzle People may have pointed this out already but I hear 2 mistakes back to back around 8:15-8:17 marks. It's sounds like a faint pager going off in the background when heard loudly and I reflexively check my pager every single time. But I love, love this recording and it still sends ...

I downloaded this on Napster so long ago and then was ecstatic when I found the DG cd on ebay when it had been discontinued. I had given up on a high quality video of this on youtube. Now here it is. I'm literally weeping as I type this!
