This song refers to the battle of Fort Sumter. The first shots of the civil war were fired at Fort Sumter, South Carolina in April of 1861.
However, the song is not about that battle, but rather the horror of that war.
PS: Shiloh was a battle in the American Civil War that took place in April ...
