Hello, thiest's and athiest's alike! My name's Peg and here's the story of how I became an athiest.
Well I was born into a Jewish family. We weren't crazy about religion, so I went to a regular public school. But my parents did force me to take religious class, which I didn't pay much attention to at first.
So one day my parents took me on a holiday and we stayed in this pretty neat hotel. As you probably know, the Bible is in just about every hotel room in the world. So because I was bored one night I decided to flip through the first few chapters and see what I could learn. I was still blissfully unaware of its violent reputation.
So I quickly began to notice plenty of inconsistencies with the Bible (aka the 'perfect word of God') For instance, Genisis 1 seemed to imply that Adam and Eve were created on the sixth day of creation, but in the very next chapter it claims that they were created after God had taken a rest, which (as most people know) happened on the seventh day. And what about their son Cain? Where did his wife come from? The Bible doesn't explain that either. Now I know what you thiests might be saying: each chapter of the Bible was writen by a different person so of course there are going to problems with it. But didn't they write these stories under God's instruction and with his heavenly guidance?
So I asked my parents about the Bible and we spent some time talking about it. They told me that they couldn't quite grasp it either and that if I wanted to learn more I would have to start paying more attention to religious class at school.
Now while we're on the subject of religious class they weren't compusary at school, but most parents made their children take them. So because I was a curious child I asked my teacher a question. I asked him how he knew it was all true. Well, you can imagine his response. He told me I just needed to trust in God and have faith, you know, the usual thiest arguements. So I began searching for a better reason to believe in it, but never found one.
So I've been an athiest since I was about 11 Simply because I see no more reason to believe in the Bible than I do in the Harry Potter books. In fact I see more reason to believe in the Harry Potter books, at least they don't contradict themselves every couple of chapters.
I know I probably bored you with my life story. Oh well, at least you know me a little better now. By the way unlike some people here I really don't have much against religion. I just think it's an interesting topic to discuss. I'm not really here to convert anybody, I'm just here to share my views.
