About this user

Gary D. Askins is a recently retired "Master Teacher" of Math and Theatre Arts at Salado High School in Texas. He was born in Los Angeles, California where his family periodically worked as migrant farmers. Gary was the first member of his family to graduate from high school. He served in the USAF as a combat medic and a senior instructor at the School of Aerospace Medicine. He worked his way through the University of Houston by serving as a test subject for the Manned Spacecraft Center, NASA. He has a Master's Degree in education earned while he served in Teacher Corps. During his 30 years of public school service he has taught in Elementary, Junior High, Middle, Intermediate, Junior College, and High School classrooms. Gary has appeared in over fifty stage productions as an actor in California and Texas. He was the Salado High School One Act Play Director for ten years during which time his plays made it to the state finals twice and to the regional level of competition six times. Mr. Askins has had several of his plays produced on local stages, these dramas include: "Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol", "The Salado Truth Tonic & Elixir Medicine Show", "The Silver Spur Melodrama or The Complete History of Bell County Abridged", "Idolatry on the Creek" and this years "Perry's Hatter is up the Creek". He has had several articles published in professional journals and has also had his poetry selected for publication in "A Treasury of American Poetry".
