William Baines, born Horbury, Wakefield 1899, died York 1922, at the tragically young age of 23. In that short time he composed over 200 works in many genres, the majority still in manuscript in British Library. He was an accomplished pianist so his catalogue contains a large number of piano works, and even a fully scored Symphony, performed as late as 1991. Some of his music betrays eclectic influences eg Debussy,Scriabin, and had he not died young, may arguably have become one of Britain's prominent composers. Musical and imaginative sophistication are hallmarks of his best work. A few works are currently in print and some are available at the IMSLP website.
This performance of 'Poem-Nocturne' was included in a lunchtime recital at All Saints' Cathedral, Wakefield, West Yorkshire in May 2013, just a mile or two from where Baines spent his formative years. His grave is in Horbury Cemetery.
