Sometimes a much more surprising and interesting plot can be created if you start at the end of the story and work you way backwards to the beginning.
Show notes: For the multimedia age. Write a story backwards. You want to take your reader on a journey. Try from the climatic scene near the end and figure out the preceding scene and continue until at the beginning. You don't need to always write this way but it's worth trying a couple of times. You don't want your reader to journey on a flat plane, you want the road to be winding up and down with many turns in the road and the viewer not able to see too far, what is ahead. Writing a story backwards can be a great way to work with this principle: that a good story is a process of slowly revealing something that is hidden from the reader. If you already know the outcome it's a matter of hiding it from the reader. The unexpected plot changes can develop by themselves when you work your way in reverse to the beginning. You have a scene and three character. Ask yourself why each character is there. That alone will generate a lot of history and the story starts growing back in time. So writing fiction often works in reverse time. By making a scene feel more real you will come up with a back-story that can be the story that leads to the surprise conclusion. Creating back story is essentially writing a story backwards. Exercise at the end, here is the scenario. Make up what happened to bring this character to this strange situation.
Creative writing/ storytelling tutorial for the multimedia age. The writing strategies offered in these tutorials can also be applied to podcasting, film work, storyboarding, cartooning, etc. but they are still very much about writing. Writing is an important skill for most kinds of multimedia artists.
These tutorials are offered for free to help promote my own story telling so please take a moment to see one of my videos at solomation.com. Thanks and I hope your writing goes well!
