Kudos to phyllie60. At age 71, I've been lucky enough to have seen them all - Johnnie, Merle, Waylon, Willie, Kris - and there NEVER was a better showman or a greater voice than Waylon. Goddamn, I sure miss him! You're right, p60, that was when country meant Country, not the sorry crap that's ...
GODDAMN, WAS HE GREAT, OR WHAT!? I'm 71, and my buddies are 69 and 72, and we argue over who was the greatest. One says Merle, one says Willie, but you damn sure never saw a better stage performance, or heard a better studio production than Waylon, the Eternal King, and best there ever was.
Waylon said, "If we could all sing like we wanted to, we'd all sound like George Jones.", and nobody had a more perfect voice than Possum, but when it came to kickin' ass and takin' names, nobody ever did it better than Waylon. Nobody! Ever!
1977SOUTHERNBOY had it right! This is from the time when real giants walked the earth. In '59, Waylon dodged a bullet, in '63, Johnny hit the scene, as did The Animals. In '72, The Outlaws album was released, and for 15 years we bathed in the waters of pure, heavy, true country. What a ride....
