Some call me Ryan. My name is not important. Others call me Rye, Rybo and Frian. I have worked as an avian data analyst, hunter gatherer, waste manager volunteer, carnivorous and succulent plant botanist, ceramic intern, ropes course leader volunteer, restaurant employee assistant, digital movie editor, and pickled mango salesman. One day while I was selling mangoes in Hawaii a nearby smoothie shack owner informed me that I was infringing on her bottom line. I was reasonable. I didn't argue about the legality of selling mangoes on the premises. Instead I experimented with other business sites and ended up finding a more profitable location. It is my belief that it is reasonable to play it safe, not to leap, but it is not always reasonable to be reasonable. I have been taken away from my Mother and forced to work in a used clothing store named Value City in Fiji. I have acquired a slinky from a rain man in India. I have ascended Mount Saint Helens and watched the steaming crater. I have biked from the icy top of Haleakala to the warm ocean below. I have devoured spicy sausages in Germany. I have wept when a troop of monkeys stole my only honey sandwich in Nepal. I have watched tired salmon fight upstream as I worried about grizzly bears in Alaska. I have been nibbled half to death by a torrent of pigeons in Venice. I have discovered a secret bat cave behind some ferns in Bolinas. I have ventured deep underground in the cold glow worm caves of New Zealand. In my spare time I observe nature. I speculated that some organism made the beach glow at night, took a night class about glowing organisms, and found that I was correct, that plankton was making the beach glow. I observed how Joshua trees branch when their growing tips flower and die and confirmed it in a book about dessert flora. I noticed the symbiotic relationship between ants and peach extrafloral nectaries and confirmed it on Google. I grow Lychees, plums, peaches, oranges, pummeloes, and dates from seed. Inevitably they don't all live. I think about death. What is the meaning of life. Is there life after death. Is religion a sham? Is sleep like death? These questions have haunted me my entire life. I like to gnaw on food as I contemplate these mysteries. One day as I was gnawing on one of my homegrown plums I had a realization. I am insignificant in the master plan of life. I am just like the ants on the peach trees, or the grizzly bears. All I do is eat and sleep. Even if I go to college and am successful beyond my wildest dreams, the environment will continue to be destroyed, a quarter of the world's population will continue to starve, and a million petty wars will be fought. I've heard people say that the only thing between you and your goals are you and your goals. I hate to be pessimistic. I hate to doubt mankind's powers and in doing so give power to his doubts, but it doesn't seem like we are getting any closer to solving the environment, population, starvation, and warefare issues. The world is a daunting place, but I believe there is hope. The healing power of the ocean's negative ions, garlic and friendship give me hope. I'll take on the challenge. I'll fight the good fight. A wise man once said that if you see a beach full of stranded starfish you should pick one up and throw it back into the water. You may not be able to save all the starfish, but it certainly matters to the starfish who's life you saved. What I would like to accomplish is to rescue more starfish, metaphorically speaking that is. Sometimes I will rescue starfish and sometimes I will be a starfish. It is important to give and receive. Anyway, as you can see I like to think, observe, create, and travel. Life is a place where people think, observe, create, and travel more than average. I would like to think more.
