March 1997 We take a look at the negative consequences of Malysia's drive towards economic successes.
Smuggled in by island traders, millions of illegal, foreign workers have flooded building sites in search of a better life. As sunset dapples the straits of Malacca, fishing boats carry across human cargoes. Teak traders smuggling Indonesian workers are persuaded to talk of the dangers: storms, navy patrols. In Kuala Lumpur it's boom time. Silver skyscrapers tower above cement mixers and bulldozers. Stacked up, pre-fab containers provide a home for the workers on the building sites with often 10 to a room, most are illegal. 29 year old Ily describes his sojourn in a detention centre after he was caught. Woken up every two hours, he was beaten up for falling asleep during a roll call. Deputy PM, Anwar Ibrahim, admits, "there have been complaints about the treatment of these workers, so I think these need to be regularised." But when Irene Fernandez investigated the dire conditions in detention centres, she was charged with false reporting by the authorities. Desperate for economic success, Malaysia turns a blind eye to the illegal trade it has come to depend on.

Nov 1996 In the very heartland of tribal Borneo, luscious green valleys and cloudy glades are about to be flooded. The Bakun Dam project is one of Malaysia's biggest secrets and its creation will destroy the lands belonging to the Kenyah tribe. In the village of Long Geng, a family scoff at the government relocation plan to give them 7 acres next to a company plantation. One young man says angrily, "For us life means living with our community. What they call progress is really murder - the killing of the community." Proud of their self-sufficiency, villagers of all ages work together. As one little girl pulls fishing nets through a stream, an older women treads the water to stir up the mud. "This way the fish won't see us", she explains, laughing. Later a lady laments, "We are sick in the heart that they want to block up the Bakun". Determined not to abandon the graves of their ancestors, many villagers say that the army will have to come and drag them away. Others are more defiant, "Let them shoot us and then we will be at peace." At great personal risk, our reporter gives voice to a community facing extinction.

August 2006 Malaysia's employers stand accused of abusing Indonesian maids. We reveal evidence of mass exploitation, and governments unwilling to intervene in this lucrative business.
"I saw my friends coming back to the village from Malaysia with lots of money... so I came here." But, Nirmala Bonat soon wished she had stayed behind. Her employer "poured hot water over me, pressed an iron to my body and beat me all over". Without legislation to protect the 320,000 Indonesian workers in Malaysia, it is a widespread and growing problem. Whilst Malaysia's Indonesian Ambassador Prince Rushdihardjo worries about those injured that "escape to our embassy," his government is reluctant to complain. It seems the wealth they return to their country is too valuable.
