My name is Arash and I am an Iranian originally from Shiraz, now living in the United States.

Having been raised in an ultra-secularist non-religious background, my life's religious beliefs had been, for its earlier part and like so many Iranians living outside the US, very skeptical if at all present. I used to hate the Islamic Republic of Iran, I hated my connections to it, I hated even being born in it. I thought (wishfully), like many Iranians, that the Islamic Republic was a group of foreign invaders who would not stop at anything but to destroy Iranians. Thanks to the Zionist Propaganda (fulfilling the Divide and Conquer strategy), I thought everything was going wrong in Iran, the government, the human rights, the religion etc etc. I only searched for "Anti-Mullah" sites, and for my part, enjoyed all the hatred and insults spewed at the most honorable clerics.

Yet something about my fellow secularist Iranians felt just wrong. I had turned to Marxism by then, looking at how it turned the countries of Russia (The Soviet Union) and China from poor "totalitarian" states to "industrial" powers. Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Khrushchev were heroes to me then. However I could not be more lost by then.

Things changed as I had the first glimpses of the Quran, to which I was nonchalant to, all the while before. I read it and it changed my life. It literally had all the power it can provide me spiritually. I, an Iranian born in Iran, who had always proudly exclaimed of my pre-Islamic roots, had found in the vastness of history a place for Islam in the heart of Iran. I found that Iran belonged to Islam, and Islam belonged to the heart of Iranians, and that Islamic influence on Iranian thinking was an inalienable part of Iranian history (from Medieval Sciences to contemporary Sufism and everything in between).

Well my journey to Islam brought with it a new door of ideals. But that is a completely different story. I journeyed at first into Salafee-ism, which thanks to Saudi money to the nearest mosque, had a growing influence on the people. Due to various problems and contradictions within it I changed to Quran only Islam, then Sufism and then finally for the last 4-5 years I had been a Shia. I have found no contradictions, no theological clashes and a perfectly good ideology by which I was finally at peace with myself. I still believe,and very strongly by the way, that Sunnis are our brothers in Islam and Islamic unity is the key to a stronger more absolute form of Islamic Identity.
