APPLIYA works hand-in-hand with Japanese iPhone developers to bring the best in Japanese culture, design and ingenuity to the world through the international iPhone community. APPLIYA was founded in October 2008 with financial support from Softbank Inc., the exclusive mobile provider of the iPhone in Japan.

BEHIND THE NAME
In Japanese, the suffix -ya often means "store," or "shop." iPhone applications in Japan are called appli. Hence, one meaning of 'APPLI-YA' is literally iPhone application shop.

However, years ago during the Showa Period of Japan (1926-1989), there were an abundance of little candy shops called dagashi-ya. Dagashi meaning candy. In particular, very inexpensive candy. Children would stop by the dagashi-ya in old downtown Tokyo on the way home from school, pick up a few pieces of dagashi with their loose change, and play with their friends nearby.

The iTunes store represents a digital resurgence of the Tokyo dagashi-ya of old. For just a dollar or two, you can download and enjoy a simple iPhone application.

To the Japanese ear, appli and dagashi share the same number of syllables (three: da-ga-shi, a-ppu-ri). For the Japanese, it doesn't take much of a leap of the imagination to connect APPLIYA with the image of these old dagashiya. We think the symmetry between the two — appli and dagashi — is not only a fun pun, but also quite an apt metaphor.
