Aoife comes from one of the most musical families in Donegal and hence had her fair share of influences growing up. Compared to many of her relatives her interest in music didnt blossom until her early teenage years when Aoife would sit in on guitar lessons her father gave in their living room. Soon after she demanded an electric guitar for Christmas and furiously started looking for bands which used guitar hooks and riffs. Her early influences were therefore the music of many Indie bands such as Snow Patrol, The Killers, The Strokes and Razorlight or whatever else her older sister was listening to!
At the age of 16 she was accepted to a singer-songwriter course at the Academy of Arts in Derry which gave her her first taste of song-writing. During the two week course she wrote and recorded 2 songs (which are safely locked away never to be heard by human ears again!). Part of the course also involved performing these songs in front of an audience consisting mostly of friends and relatives. This was her first stage performance and it scared the beejaysus out of her!
After heading to college in 2006 Aoifes taste in music changed drastically after having an epiphany that most modern music sucks! Therefore she raided her parents CDs, cassettes and LPs and was soon surrounded by Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Paul Simon, James Taylor and Steely Dan. Her interest in piano and keyboard was greatly increased with this change in musical taste.
Since then Aoife has developed a love for folk and country and is especially inspired by the female singer-songwriter scene. She includes Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow and Patty Griffin as some of her greatest influences. The past few years have also seen her learn to play the drums and mandolin.
Aoife is now in her final year of an Environmental Biology degree in UCD and continues to write and record songs. She also performs in a two piece acoustic cover band which has regular gigs around the Donegal area. She hopes to pursue music as a career in the near future.
