THE SOUND...
progress rock meets afrocolombian rhythm. Musica para la revolucion!

BACKGROUND...
It all started with two North Americans playing music on the buses in Quito, Ecuador, simply looking to get their daily supply of food. They worked their way up to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, serenading the tourists in the popular plazas of Cartagena. Soon they had completed more than 30 songs in both English and Spanish. They tried to create their home in Medellin, Colombia, but found creativity much easier to come by in the mountains on the outskirts of the city. They obtained equipment and secluded themselves for a year in a mountainous jungle where one must learn to trust his instincts but not let his imagination take control.

Surrounded by a picturesque landscape and people who see the world from a different view, these two young North Americans devoted every waking moment towards creating music. They named themselves "Antioquia" after the department ("state" / "province") where they lived in Colombia.

Antioquia's style is difficult to classify. They grew up on rock, listening to everything from Primus to Phish to Pink Floyd, but their travels opened their eyes. They found an immediate connection to the rhythms of Africa, listening to artists such as Fela Kuti and Ali Toure. Spending two years in a culture where music is hope, and hope is life, Latin rhythms became a huge part of their art.

In Latin America, the trend is geared towards mastering the rhythms already created rather than inventing new rhythms. Antioquia became motivated to combine the best of both worlds. They studied with Juan Rafael, a student of Folklore music from the coast of Colombia. The rhythms they learned, such as 'La Cumbia', use a variety of percussion and a flute-like instrument called 'La Gaita', and combine African rhythms carried on by slave descendants with the Indigenous music of Colombia. Antioquia also worked with a talented percussionist named Juan Guillermo, who studied three years in Cuba, learning a variety of salsa and Afro-Cuban rhythms. Antioquia played several shows in Colombia in places such as Eslabon, Arcanos, La Tocata, and La Universidad Tecnologica. Antioquia also participated in an annual festival in Medellin, El Dia de La Musica. In 2005 Craig & Adley took Antioquia to Vancouver, BC where they played venues including The Picadilly Pub and The Fairview.

THE BAY AREA
Since settling in San Francisco in June 2006 the band has been making its way onto the stage in the Bay area, rockin venues including Ashkenaz, the Starry Plough, the Elbo Room, the Connecticut Yankee, the Makeout Room, Temple Bar (Santa Monica), Moe's Alley (Santa Cruz) & Bruno's.
