Anil Kokaram is an Oscar award-winning Trinity College Dublin lecturer with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department and algorithms guru for The Foundry, a London-based software developer specializing in visual effects technology for the film and video markets. Furnace is a suite of tools for visual effects professionals, mainly used for high end work, with many of the top studios and major film houses using Foundry products to put together feature films. Furnace is predominantly used by Shake and Discreet Systems artists on such films as The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Matrix Trilogy, Batman Begins, Fantastic Four, King Kong, Casino Royale, Poseidon, Superman Returns, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and X-Men 3 The Last Stand.

Prof Anil Kokaram of Trinity College Dublin talks about his research which involves designing ways to improve the quality of visual material. Prof Kokaram heads up the Signal Processing and Media Applications Group in TCD. The groups work is involved in a very wide range of research activities centred on digital signal processing technology. The group has helped to create new cinema post-production tools and the motion estimation technology (in collaboration with The Foundry) is used around the world for film special effects in movies like Matrix, Lord of the Rings, X-Men, Spider Man, and Harry Potter. Prof Kokaram, along with The Foundry, won a 2007 Scientific and Engineering Award® from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® for their research into post-production software. Signal processing is a fundamental component in all this work. The group exploits knowledge from statistics, applied mathematics, computer vision, image/video/audio processing in order to solve very unique problems in several domains.
