Paul McCartney nació en Walton Hospital de Liverpool, Inglaterra, donde su madre, Mary (née Mohan), había trabajado como enfermera en la sala de maternidad. Tiene un hermano, Michael, nacido el 7 de enero de 1943. McCartney fue bautizado católico pero se crió no confesional: su madre era católica, y su padre, James "Jim" McCartney, era protestante se volvió agnóstico. En 1955, la familia McCartney se trasladó a 20 Forthlin Road en Allerton. Mary McCartney en una bicicleta a las casas donde se necesitaba de matrona, y uno de los primeros McCartney es la memoria de su marcha cuando estaba nevando mucho. El 31 de octubre de 1956, Mary McCartney, una gran fumadora, murió de una embolia tras una operación de mastectomía para detener la propagación de su cáncer de mama. La pérdida prematura de su madre después conectado McCartney con John Lennon, cuya madre, Julia, murió tras ser atropellada por un automóvil cuando Lennon tenía 17 años.
