My involvement in the tubes has been somewhat flaccid this year.Much like the presidency of Mr Obama.As I type Mr Stephen Harper is mounting the Canadian electorate with a Carl Rovian style campaign of misinformation distortion and pandering. If this snake eyed Machiavellian manipulator manages to convince a basically apathetic public that his minority cabal has somehow protected Canada from the economic genocide occurring south of the border, then we deserve the majority conservative junta he longs to establish .The dismantling of the Canadian social safety net will begin in earnest. The political vision and courage that is required to make any changes in our galloping consumption of the planet seems to be lacking at every level. The nuclear power plant mess in Japan is still unfolding.When you compare the environmental impact of all nuclear power plant accidents and the problem of permanent waste storage(apparently the size of two soda cans per person per lifetime), how does that compare to the poisonous open sewers of the tar sands and the vast risks of deep water drilling? Do we have the luxury of dismissing nuclear power and is it really as bad as coal and oil? And can we realistically assess the situation or just stockpile iodine and shriek fearfully? Is capitalism, with its myopic obsession on monetary profit compatible with environmental reform? Do the super rich actually believe they can cocoon themselves with money and gold as the place goes toxic? Will the teabaggers succeed in demolishing what is left of public education?The seal hugging European boycott managed to close the seal hunt and DFO has announced a cull to control the burgeoning population.An example of how hysteria creates ironic results.Will the people of the middle east rid themselves of crazed dictators and achieve democracy ? Or will the crazed merely be replaced by the corporate?I have no answers but am convinced that corporate feudalism and global capitalism don't even allow for the essential inquiry. One thing seems certain. Things are getting hotter.

I am increasingly horrified about the state of the Oceans.Plastic.Poisoned lobsters. Dying coral.Warming. Over fishing. An unrealistic head in the sand refusal to see the necessity for fish farming and working on improving it and placing some controls on the corporations who now control it. Instead everyone shops for wild salmon. Because labels never lie. sigh. And the plastic. And the shark fin fishery. And the stupid distraction of white seals on white ice with red blood. Now that has stopped you can enjoy the halibut on yer plate that actually IS endangered. Did I mention the plastic?So glad Obama has decided to drill on the eastern seaboard. So much more important that seals are safe. And the plastic.
Other political concerns are the steady erosion of the accessibility of abortion and decriminalizing of euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. And the legalization of pot. All issues of concern for those of us who are sure this is the only life we get. And the plastic.
