My interests in YouTube go through various phases. I've recently collected a large number of videos about the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.
Those seventeen days in February 2010 were Canada at its best...and the most amazing, awesome, magical event in Canadian history! Why?
1. Our athletes won a record-breaking 14 gold medals...more than any other country has ever won during the Winter Olympics!
2. The Olympics inspired an incredible outpouring of patriotism and celebration across Canada, which was unlike anything this country has ever seen.
3. From around the world, international athletes, spectators, celebrities, and the media converged on Vancouver. The world's attention was fixed on Vancouver and Canada for 17 days!
4. The enthusiasm and energy in Vancouver and Whistler lifted the winter Olympics to a whole new level. The streets were filled with partying spectators, the venues were packed with cheering fans, and the entire country was united for two weeks behind a single cause.
5. These games were probably the most powerful unifying force in Canadian history. English Canadians cheered for French Canadian athletes; French Canadians cheered for English Canadian athletes. The divisions between us disappeared. Finally, we felt like one nation.
6. Our athletes gave us some incredibly compelling performances! Remember Alexandre Bilodeau's first gold medal for Canada...Joannie Rochette courageously skating days after her mother's death...Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir's superb, flawless ice dancing...and Team Canada beating the U.S. to win the gold medal in men's hockey!
7. A very impressive array of Canadian celebrities participated in the opening and closing ceremonies: Nikki Yanofsky, Bryan Adams, Nelly Furtado, Sarah McLachlan, k.d. Lang, Donald Sutherland, Romeo Dallaire, Bobby Orr, Anne Murray, Julie Payette, Nancy Greene, Rick Hansen, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Nash, Neil Young, William Shatner, Catherine O'Hara, Michael J. Fox, Michael Buble, Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Alanis Morissette...Wow!!
8. And the Games took place in Vancouver, B.C. With its sublime blend of mountains, forest, and ocean, Vancouver is the most beautiful city in Canada, and one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
I think that is a pretty amazing set of facts.
