Anajuwa Gallery was created to introduce international collectors and art aficionados to the groundbreaking work of contemporary African Artists. A relatively unexploited area of the art scene, African contemporary art is an innovative fusion of traditional influences with modern and contemporary styles and forms.

Drawing on Africas rich cultural and artistic heritage, Africa art today is an expression of modern Africa itself; an explosive amalgamation of divergent worlds. Located on Melrose Avenue Los Angeles, Anajuwa Gallery offers the rare opportunity to view the unique work of these artists on canvas, and through tribal artefacts and sculpture.

MWAMBA MULANGALA


Born in 1976 in Mbala Zambia, Mwamba Mulangala graduated from the Evelyn Hone College with an Art Teachers Diploma. He has gone on to exhibit both locally and internationally including solo shows at the Dubuque Museum of Art Iowa, and the National Museum of Art Zambia. Often drawing on sacred tribal figures as inspiration, Mulangala describes his work as meditations on self, culture and identity.

Emerging as one of the most innovative and promising artists from the region in the last year, Mulangala has been lauded by his colleagues as the praise painter of spiritual expression. As well as winning numerous local awards Mulangala is active member of the local community and continues to work as an art instructor with orphans and street children in Lusaka.

STARY MWAMBA


Born and raised in Chingola Zambia, Stary Mwaba drew early inspiration from his rural surroundings. Mwabas greatest strength lies in his ability his ability to capture the struggle and aspirations of his people with delicate precision and empathy. Identifying with his subjects, Mwabas work portrays their internal longing and search for fulfillment both physically and spiritually. Mwabas last solo exhibition in Johannesburg Solace of a Migrant, focused on the individuals solitary journey; his keen eye portraying the fragility and vulnerability of each of his characters. Losing his father early in life and tending to an ailing mother Mwabas heartfelt and emotional work steers away from political commentary. Rather, his depictions reflect his own internal journey and commitment to celebrate beauty in solitude, and persevere despite hardship. A self-taught artist Mwaba painted tirelessly as a young adult, and eventually caught the eye of various patrons. Initially working as an apprentice under Lutanda Mwamba, Stary Mwaba has gone on to win the hearts and attention of art collectors worldwide. Selling out shows, he has exhibited in New York, London, Dublin, Jamaica, Tokyo and cities across Africa.
