@IJUSTSUBSCRIBENOW No, when the smoke ended, thats when the boosters burned out. The main engines burn for another 6 min. to get to space with no visual exhaust.

@thebrowntrainer There is a speed brake on the rudder and regular hydraulic brakes on the gear. The chute was added in 1994 to help releave stress on the gear and brakes. It is not required for landing. And remember, the shuttle is a glider on landing. There are no engines running.

@chuckisez You are incorrect. Two O2 lines connected to a manifold and then to the helmet. One O2 supply came from the orbiter and the other from the PEAP or emergency O2 bottles mounted on their seats. The PEAPS are Personal Emergency Air Packs also used for a pad escape if required. @65FALCONSG The politicians caused that. The shuttles 3 billion dollar budget was the same when Nasa was launching 8 & 9 missions a year. Nasa wanted to launch more and do more at no extra cost but Bush ordered them to finish the ISS and then quit.

@41381jls Nothing exploded. Structural forces tore the shuttle apart. They probably heard pieces going subsonic as they came into the atmosphere.

No blank checks like the Apollo program. Ejection seats were installed for 2 ppl on the first 4 flights. You cant have ejection sea...

They are putting together the ergometer (exercise bike) at first then setting up for on orbit ops. This includes them setting up the video system, checking out EMU's and doing a little house cleaning with the vacuum.

@KnowYourRealEstate Exactly.There was only enough built into it to test aerodynamics, handling and landing procedures etc. Remember, back in the late 70's, nothing like this had been done before. Its the same size and all but all the systems required for space and ground testing are not there.
