It appears the right tension arm is almost "Slammed" up againt it's stop! Should it be balanced about 1/2 way up like on the left arm? Maybe the start-up high torque didn't relax down to a running torque state?

Telefunken M20 & M21 are (were) great tape recorders. Vertually non-existant in the US, the only real problem is availability of parts & boards. An M20 with Vario-rack, VU meter bridge & monitor speaker make a great vintage package!

Before you critically tested both decks for sound "quality", were both decks firest calabrated (bias & Eq) for Ampex 457? Comments like "Crisper" or "More detailed" could indicate a bias tweek may have been needed?

The BR-20 sold quickly, as did my Tascam 42B, Technics 1700, Sony TC850, Crown CX822-P4 and my Crown SX824. Time moves on to new reel to reel decks. I now want to get my hands on a Ferrograph Logic-7, or a Telefunken (AEG) magnetophon M20 or M21.

The service manuals are "Vol-1" AND "Vol-2". You'll need the NAB spacers under those plastic hubs. You won't need them if using 5" or 7" reels.

Upon repair, can you still adhere to the original spec.? Ex; The free air resonant frequency (Fs) of the cone & Xmax spec? Ex: I have 12" woofers by Jensen (1969 vintage) with an Fs of 16hz & an Xmax of 1". .
