The lower band off a 1903 may not fit as it was designed to sit on top of the hand guard lip around a M93 style barrel. Now you have the barrel jacket to confront with so it may not even slip on.

Regardless, I would sitll give it a try either way.

I was able to narrow the problem down to the retaining spring that holds the cartridge retainer in place against the pressure of the rounds coming up from the magazine. Funny thing is I haven't been out to the range with this particular rifle so I should make another trip with this...

It depends primarily where you live. Prices will vary based on the collector market and available examples to be had.

It really depends where you are, geographically.

If in the U.S., you have the choice of the South American export examples (some Ex-German military ones there too), Turkish used 88.05s, or Gewehr 88s vet bring backs.

Since I am in Canada, the 88.05s imported from Turkey 30 or so ...

I had no idea the take down tool could be used to help load the magazine. All this time I have used my thumb to accomplish the same job.

Thank you for showing us what this tool does, I shall spread the word.

Germany was proud during the Imperial days but nowadays, they are told to forget all of that and assimilate into a western style culture and atmosphere. I don't connect with "New Germany" and I wish I had a time machine.

What type of smokeless powder have you tried and found some good results with ? I am curious to give my 71.84 a try but her condition is so nice that I do not want to deal with black powder.

I am privileged to own some Gewehr 98 examples and Kar98k examples as well. One is a 1940, the other a 1944, both are russian captures, both have superb smooth actions, and both can hit the bulls eye at 100m. Which one do I prefer more ? I do lean towards the Gewehr 88 and 98s a...

I bought an SKS for $180 and it never jams. Just goes to show the quality of make (or lack there of) in firearms made nowadays.
