Living in the East Village and born and bred in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Alex Chappo fuses his northern city catwalk blues with his southern suburban boy charm in a musical style that can only be called his own. Chappo's music is a mixure of bluesy, jazzy chord progressions, a dash of raw bone folk, some friendly harmonica jams, and a taste of hip hop poetry. His voice can stretch from a charismatic and commanding MC to a soft, melodic vulnerable one. The prominent driving force behind alex's music is the cyclical nature of inspiration. He writes in the hopes that one song, riff, or lyric will inspire one artist, listener, or person to create, act or impact the universe now. Alex Chappo recently released his debut album entitled "Bathtub Variations: Vol. 1." The title comes from the specific place where he first experimented with his musical style: the bathtub in his home in Baton Rouge. Chappo remembers a specific encounter with his mother: "Do I have time to take a shower before supper?" Alex had asked eagerly. "Well you have time for one song, not an entire album" his mother would reply. With impeccable acoustics, a beat-born-bathtub, and his imagination, Chappo developed his skills and potential in that bathroom. Therefore, it seemed only appropriate to record his first album in that very spot. After four months of self-recording, self-producing, composing, hand silk-screening the covers (to give each case its own vibe), and mucho help, love, and support from his family and friends, Alex Chappo completed his debut album "Bathtub Variations Vol. 1."
A CHAPPO TRIO
In March, Alex met up with bassist Marques Durieux and drummer Seth White. Marques kicks up the funk with an impressive mixture of finger picking, slapping and muted harmonics that provide a good organic flow keeping the audience lusting for the next riff. Seth brings to the table over 10 years of New York experience. From loose, wet jazz grooves that have the vibrancy of the 30's to the head-bobbing hip-hop/rock & roll beats of today, Seth keeps it smooth and fresh. CHAPPO enjoys regularly playing at Sidewalk Bar, Rockwood Music Hall, Plan B,and The Knitting Factory.
