"If I thought this war was to abolish slavery, I would resign my commission, and offer my sword to the other side."

"My politics are of a practical kind - the integrity of the country, the supremacy of the Federal government, an honorable peace, or none at all."
~Major General and 1880 Presidential Candidate,(D)Winfield Scott Hancock
"Always mystify, mislead and surprise the enemy; and when you strike and overcome him, never let up in the pursuit. Never fight against heavy odds if you can hurl your own force on only a part of your enemy and crush it. A small army may thus destroy a large one, and repeated victory will make you invincible."
~Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
"Why do men fight who were born to be brothers?"
~James Longstreet
"Every attempt to make war easy and safe will result in humiliation and disaster. "
~William Tecumseh Sherman
Well, for starters, I love history. It is a deep passion of mine dating back to the Civil War and my Great, Great, Great, Great grandfather, who fought with the 96th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment in the Army of the Potomic. He served under George McClellan at the battle of Antietam, Ambrose Burnside at the Battle of Fredricksburg, Joe Hooker at the battle of Chancellorsville, and George Meade at Gettysburg. He would also fight against Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh, Lee at the Wilderness, and he would be injured at the Mule Shoe of Spotsylvania, fighting Braxton Bragg's corp. He would survive these campains and go on to work on the railroad in a rural town of Pinegrove, PA. While doing further research, I have come across a few other ancestors of mine who fought for the Army of the Tennessee and the Army of the Shenedoah, aswell as the Confederate Navy.
I tend to study the American Civil War without bias, which makes me reviled to some Northerners and most Southerners. I do not advocate seccesionist views, while I do agree with the principles of states rights. I don't however, agree with John Calhoun, rather the man who defined the rights of social contract, John Locke, in his book "The Two Treatises of Civil Government." I don't however, support the attack on Fort Summter, which evidently started the ACW. My favorite Confederate figure in the ACW is James Longstreet. Longstreet is by far my favorite general, living or dead. A devout Episcapalean since his 3 children died of Scarlet Fever, Longstreet's politics were of his own, and not biased toward the North or the South. He followed his own whim, and is known as one of the South's greatest generals for that. Despite graduating 56 out of 58 cadets in his West Point Class, Longstreet's military prowess soon gave him the title of Liutenant Commander and a position as the 1st Corp Commander in the Army of the Northern Virginia. He would go on to be Lee's voice of reason after Stonewall Jackson's death. After the war, he served in Ulysses S. Grant's administration as ambassador to Turkey. Needless to say, this, and his switching from dixiecrat to a skalawag (Southern Republican, who was considered a traitor by Southerners still loyal to the CSA) has caused Longstreet to become a rather controversial character throughout America's history.
Other than Longstreet, I like Winfield Scott Hancock. As McClellan once said, his military prowess is simply superb. Like Longstreet, Hancock's rank of 18 of of 28 in his Westpoint class was not satisfactory of a general of his calibur, but Hancock would prove his skill at Antietam and then at Gettysburg. Hancock is selfless, stating during Pickett's charge "There are times when a field commander's life are not important." It was this selfless attitude that won over the hearts of many of his 2nd Corp. After the war, Hancock became an insturmental figure in the Reconstruction of the South. He would later run for President in 1880 as the Democratic candidate. He however, would lose.
My politics-Well, I am a conservative Republican. Always have been, always will. With the 08 election looming, I feel more interested in politics as ever. Then again, I am only 15, and I am finally understanding political news. I am for John McCain and Sarah Palin, and I think that they can bring about great change.
As for my views on religion, I am a practicing Roman Catholic. No, I am not a fundy. I find fundemental Christians narrowminded. True Roman Catholics use the historical critical method of analyzation on scripture, they don't take everything in literal sense. Despite popular belief, Most of the bible has a deeper meaning than face value. When reading scripture, You need to look at the form and content, two literary elements you should use for any author, whether it be Steinbeck, Hemmingway, Miller, Crane, Byrd, Locke, Rousseau, Kant, or any other writer. With that said, I am well versed in science, and I do believe in evolution.
