I'm just a wannabe polyglot. I speak English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Russian, some Polish and some Ukrainian . I also know Latin.
...
I have a deep academic interest in Medieval History, especially in what is called "Western Esotericism", based on the works of Frances A. Yates about magic in Renaissance. But I enjoy any (serious) topic related to Middle Ages, from slavery to weaponry.
.
Recently I had the opportunity to study Romanic Philology and it became my passion as it melts into one both my obsessions with languages and history. I started to take a serious approach to what is known as the sources of "vulgar Latin" like the "appendix Probi" and the "Peregrinatio Aetheriae".
.
I must declare that both fields of study, Philology and Medieval History are extremely weak and clumsy in my country, so I will be eager to share experiences with those who are fortunate enough to have access to better materials and documents as well as are more knowledgeable in these particular topics.

Brazil

Yes German is an important language for scholarship, perhaps in some areas (e.g. Medieval Studies) more than in others.
I have done little course work in German and yet over the years have taught myself to read in the language with a certain amount of ease. I have used German for studying other languages like Persian. This summer I read more than 500 pages in German.
My pronunciation is not at all native, but I can usually be understood.

He estado pensando subir mas lecturas en latin, pues he estado leyendo libros bastante variados en dicho idioma.

French was a highly influencial language in the Middle East for several centuries, probably into the early 20th Century. Many Turkish words for modern things are also French.
