A.J. Throwback is a producer, songwriter and artist from Washington, D.C. With specialties in hip-hop and R&B music, he is a member of the in-house production team for High Society/M.O.R.A.L. Music and a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). As radio personality and President/C.E.O. of Kissible Entertainment Bakeisha "Lady Kiss" McCall once described, his music can be simply considered "so smooth".Currently, A.J. is producing on projects for High Society label mates Ransom Rellic, Gladiator and DHtheArtist. He and fellow label mate B-Witty have formed a hip-hop duo, BABE Ruthless, and they are in the initial writing and producing stages for their first mixtape. He is actively producing outside of High Society for artists such as Get Nice, Rize Above, Kae-9, Princess of Controversy, Energy Jones and Klutch. He performed and produced the new theme song for "The Lady Kiss Show" on WVCR-FM 88.3 "The Saint" based out of Albany, New York. Additionally, he is working on his debut commercial release, As It Naturally Came to Me..., which he plans to put out later this year or early 2012. In the personal triumph track called "The Wall," he says: "[I] refuse to ever be a temporary victim/Momentary setbacks are simply necessary missions/So as I peer through the glass and the sun shows its face/My struggle is the way that God grows me through His grace."
As a producer, A.J.'s beginnings started with D.C. hip-hop artists K-MOB and Princess of Controversy between 2002 and 2003. For K-MOB, he produced songs for the trio such as "#1 Contender," "DC Anthem," "First to Last," and "We Don't Care". For Princess of Controversy, he produced "Innocence (From The Eyes of a Child)" and "Hypnotic" from her debut EP, Personal Messenger (2004). His production works were played on both HOT 97 in New York City and The Star and Bucwild Show in 2005. In 2007, he began producing for Ransom Rellic--particularly crafting the mixtape favorite, "Jump". In 2008, he remixed Lil' Wayne's "Lollipop" and Teyana Taylor's "Google Me" for Remix Kingz Music Group based out of D.C. In 2009, he reunited with K-MOB member Klutch and produced songs like "Shorty Is A Rolla," "Get Your Swag Up" and "Can You Picture" in preparation for his his yet-to-be-released solo album, My World, My Way. In the same year, he produced most of Ransom Rellic's street album, Shock Treatment: The 4228 Wisconsin Avenue Story, featuring fan favorites like "Dear Doubter" and "Guilty Pleasures" In 2010, he rejoined with Princess of Controversy for her debut LP, Soul-Hop, and produced the lead-off single, "I'm Feelin' Myself" (featuring Andaiye), as well as "The Pulpit" and "Labels".
As an artist, A.J. independently released his first mixtape, Legend of the Fall (2009). The project included him rapping over some of his favorite hip-hop and R&B instrumentals, including "Lala's Theme" [Jay-Z's "Girls, Girls, Girls"] and "Loose Cannon" [DJ Drama's "Cannon"]. Once he became a member of High Society/M.O.R.A.L. Music, he released the label's first project and his 2nd mixtape, The 8-Track Bandit (2010). With a backdrop of numerous instrumentals and loops from predominantly 70s R&B, funk and pop music, the set featured "Memo to the Naysayers" [Sly & The Family Stone's "You Can Make It If You Try"] and "Breakin' Out" [Chuck Brown's "Bustin' Loose"]. Most notably, he received support for Bandit from local blog sites, including DCMumboSauce.com (hosted by DJ Heat of WPGC-FM 95.5) and ForTheDMVOnly (hosted by well-renowned DMV producer Judah).
Futuristically, A.J. would like to not only work with more artists, but also tap into other genres and expand his reach beyond the "DMV". Whether it is with BABE Ruthless or as a solo act, he plans to do more live performances as an artist after a lengthy absence from the stage to help bring more notoriety to High Society and his hometown area. Through further networking, he hopes to connect with musicians to enhance his production for studio and live performances. Additionally, he would like to become more of an influential and encouraging figure for young people, especially those interested in the arts, and one day collaborate to open a recording studio as well as a community learning center for music.
For 2011 and with a slogan of "No BS...It's Now or Never", A.J. Throwback is poised to make more waves than ever before through his High Society productions and artist collaborations with fellow label mates, as well as his ventures with other artists and his own projects. As local promoter, manager & C.E.O. of Rose Entertainment Mike "Briscoe3Stacks" Briscoe stated, "[A.J. Throwback is] holding it down with his own unique sound."
