Aiqiu (pronounce "eye chew")
AiQiu's husband, Bill hopen recounts how this film came to be:
"A film maker asked me if I would be a part of his film on the creative process he was doing, one of a half a dozen or so artists etc." I said "sure", he visited with his crew to do some preliminary shots or screen tests I guess, and we did a shoot in my studio....then I told him "you know my wife Ai Qiu is a sculptor too, you should film her a little and see what you get" , so, I watch the kids to keep their noise out of the sound track and Ai Qiu and the film crew go out on the roof patio for about 20 minutes....when I see they have stopped filming, I run out on the patio and say in a big cheery voice "So, how did it go?" Then when I looked at their faces, I saw that the director, the sound guy, the camera man, and the lighting person are all speechless, they are va klempt, eyes welling tears...I think, My god what happened? So then I watched the film they just shot on montior and soon I was blubbering too, tears streaming down my cheeks for two resons I guess, one of course was the beautiful poetry of Ai Qiu born of such honest compassion, empathy and feeling that was so compelling, and the other was to just see her so nakedly bravely expressing her beautiful soul for all to see...as a mother..."
Ray Schmidt the film maker took me aside and said...well Bill , my plans have changed, I still might make that film about the creative process some day, but for now i have decided to just make a film about Ai Qiu, OK? -- I hope you understand. A year or so later, it came together and won best doc. film at WV festival to a standing ovation.
