Photography videos. Featuring instructional videos in black and white film photography.
About Me:

John OKeefe-Odom has enjoyed photography for over 25 years, choosing to construct a majority of his works through the syntax of traditional black and white medium format film.

His photographic works range from cyanotype to color digital. Print sizes vary from about two inches square to photo murals 24X30. His darkroom techniques include optical duplication with orthochromatic interpositives and variable contrast printing. He enjoys making his own hydroquinone film developers from scratch.

He prefers timeless subjects. Some of his favorite photographs feature: the elegance of botanicals, the complexity of forested landscape, the power of natural bodies of water and people as occupants among manmade structures.

Just a brief note to say I loved your videos on bulk loading and loading the Yashicamat; you've got that voice and precise inflection that I like very much: one of an old-style American craftsman that you can just tell does everything to a mil-spec. A model of clarity.

New video on underwater bag housings. The video is a cosmetic overview of amphibious photography applications. I draw the line at a need for underwater artificial lighting. If you are more than a few feet down, then it's time to switch over to a more serious dive housing. That said, I've gotten a lot of good utility out of this EWA Marine UF.

New video on "Path to the Subject." It's about breaking out of center-placed subjects: a problem that plagues a lot of beginners with autofocus cameras. We show about half a dozen simple photographs, and analyze them to show the path the eye took to find the subject within the frame of the photo.

One of the main ideas is that the subject is not merely an object that gets photographed, but the eye's main destination as it travels across the surface area of the photo.

The Suter Falls photographs video is a quick slideshow of some rough drafts of digital color photos from late April 2009. There are about 250 of these images still in editing. This particular video is best viewed with the "HQ" high quality function turned on; the pictures will look better on the screen that way. Thanks for looking!

I've added another video; this one built for people who are interested in starting out in medium format. The 120mm video is about using roll films in cameras that make negatives which are larger than the usual 35mm. Roll films are still used today; they're not just for your grandpa anymore.

The 120mm format has long been a standard among professional photographers. Before the advent and refinement of digital imaging, it was the standard for magazine covers and advertisements, worldwide. Even as computer technology progresses, there's no denying that 120mm films are good imaging products.

With roll film cameras being sold on the secondhand market for record low prices, medium format film technologies are becoming more and more accessible for the general public. Cameras which once cost hundreds (and today, with inflation, would have been worth hundreds more, even more expensive than some of the digital systems we see on the market now) can be snapped up for paltry sums.

I enjoy medium format film; and, I hope you'll consider it, too. Thanks to everyone for stopping by to see the videos. J.
