Just about every day tourists from around the world and local residents visit several locations near Los Angeles International Airport to observe the big jet liners as the arrive and depart. Many of these people are hard core Plane Spotters whose passion is to spend hours in one location watching the planes in flight. They come well equipped with scanners and powerful scopes to partake in their hobby. Many have been doing this for years and know their planes. In fact, they've visited airports in Africa, Europe and America. A favorite location at LAX for many of them is a small park on the South side of the airport called Imperial Hill.
AeroChannels Katie OBrien went to the park to meet a few of the plane spotters and discovered that many of them come from Britain.

Air Force pilot Harold Shumard and his crew of 15 men were aboard a massive KC-97G Stratofreighter when it rolled down the runway in Roswell, New Mexico on a cold, cloudy day in October of 1957.
The Stratofreighter departed Walker Air Force Base for a 12-hour round robin, low level survey flight that would take the crew over northern Arizona to inspect a newly charted Air Force flight route. Hours later, as they flew over Winslow, the weather took a turn for the worse. They were flying from cloudbank to cloudbank in zero visibility at low altitude. At 8:54 am, little more than two hours after they departed, the Stratofreighter crashed into a rocky Arizona cliff, shrouded by heavy clouds, killing all 16 men.
Trey Brandt has visited the crash site a number of times, taking family members to see where their loved ones died. In August 2009, Trey returned to the crash site with Richard Shumard, the son of pilot Harold Shumard.
An Aerochannel cameraman joined the expedition and captured compelling images, which you can watch in the video

There's an observation point called Imperial Hill on the south side of Los Angeles international Airport where people gather almost every day to watch the big jets land and takeoff. They call themselves plane spotters and on any given day they'll spend hours observing, logging and taking photos of the jets not only at LAX, but at airports around the world.
Plane spotters have been observing aircraft since the 1920's. During World War Two, citizens in Britain were encouraged to become members of the Royal Observer Corps to help spot enemy aircraft in the skies over England.
Plane spotting became even more popular after the war and grew exponentially with the advent of the internet and the introduction of new digital cameras.
