As for the English language: French (Norman) influence gave us some useful extra nouns. The language is still West Germanic. Germanic not German!

@wretchedyo -Ah, but if we're including control of the seas, then I'd suggest that the Royal Navy 1800-1900 would vastly increase the size of the British Empire. (It was a maritime empire, which happened to also include the biggest land territory)

@loolfactorie your ancestors may have been "Celtic" but the latest DNA evidence shows that most of our ancestors were from Friesland, Denmark(Angles, Jutes, and later Danes) and North Germany(Saxons). Quite a few Scots have the same ancestry too!

Amazed (not really) by the number of the "Great and good" inside the Abbey, who didn't know the words! The queen better get used to it - it may not be her national anthem, but it's becoming ours!

Interesting to compare the video with the one from 2006. A far greater number of English flags, and people standing up for a de facto English National anthem. All this in 5 years. Might even get our own parliament one day - not holding my breath!
