had the pleasure of hearing him sing this in toronto last week. absolutely unreal. the moment at 3:40 where the bass drops out (and it's equivalent in the da capo) killed me, it was all i could do to not start weeping hysterically.
thanks for the post :)

Wow, you make that shift into the high register at 1:25 look so easy. I can never hit it without either broadening the tempo or making a mistake. Gotta keep at it I guess.
Loved listening to this. Fluent technique, monster sound, and a great composure while performing. Bravo.

I used to think this clip was fantastic, just because of its expressive power. However, now that I have learned how to count the compas properly, and can follow it reasonably well, this bulerias is so far beyond fantastic. I don't even have a word for it.

Does anyone else hear a little bit of 'L'isle Joyeuse' by Debussy towards the end of this piece? Especially from 7:50 to the end, the harmonies, motives and textures in the two pieces sound remarkably similar. Not to detract at all from this wonderful and original composition of Messiaen, but rat...

a wonderful example of perfect technique not as an end in and of itself, but rather as a means to a subtle, sensitive and engaging musical performance. It's like he's saying "look at bach!" as opposed to "look at me!", which i enjoy very much in a guitarist.

@awyliu the dixit dominus is absolutely thrilling, although of a much different character than this (sort of an "Amen, God Damnit!!"), it don't feel like it quite captures the matter of fact nature of the word quite as well as the parsons. the palestrina is downright gorgeous, and (imo) quite sim...
